Reassurance

There's something about the ocean that always makes us feel that everything is right with the world.

It's seldom humid in the desert climate we live in and summer temps are often well above 90. So when Dad drives west for thirty miles for a picnic dinner on the beach, the moisture and the twenty degree drop in temperature feels slightly COLD to us.

Even though mom says we're locals, people stare like we just got off the tourist bus.

So we stare right back.

Dad isn't terribly convincing though since he's still wearing his hiking boots, and no amount of persuasion can change his mind.

Uhhh, Dad. Mommy says we aren't suppose to wear our shoes near the water."

"Trust me. It could be way worse. At least Dad combs his hair."

"That is NOT a man."

Hey, Dad."

"Uh, huh."

"I don't care one bit if you wear your hiking boots."

"Me neither. I really like your boots."

Okay, it does look a little, um, interesting to see sweaters at the beach where you live at the end of JUNE, for pete's sake!

And I can't believe you were brave enough to take a picture of that guy's hair!!

The whole aspect of seeing a man with long hair that wasn't combed just took them by surprise--not something they see every day. I wasn't trying to be mean or make fun of him. Her Daddy would be viewed as being just as strange for wearing his boots on the beach :-)
