Heading to the post office at noon with Cpl. DelMuro's gift, I'm expecting and dreading a very long wait in line. His package did not receive a special paint job like the others. There simply wasn't enough time. To my amazement, the postmaster is busy with the only customer in the building who happens to be wrapping up her package at the counter.
A minute later he weighs my box in at 9.9 pounds and begins to shake his head as he quotes me the price of $25.00 and pulls out an empty box from behind the counter exactly the same size as mine. The big difference: it only costs $8.95 to ship this one. He glances across the room where his supervisor is speaking to another employee and instructs me to open up my box with his scissors and place the items in the new parcel, all the while explaining to me that this act of kindness will surely bring about an unfavorable scolding from his boss whose last thought during the holiday rush is to save the customer a little money, $16.00 to be exact, which isn't really small change for a mother of four. I have no shipping tape to seal up the new box until the kind women at the counter offers up her roll to me and tells me she is happy to have a part in the delivery of Cpl. DelMuro's gift.

UNbelievable about your post office being deserted!!!! That in itself would be something to be thankful for, definitely!
I spent $90 total on postage this year. I about choked. That was more than most of the presents, as we sent several grandparents/aunts & uncles photo collages in $3 frames. :)
