Drought

During the last five weeks, rehearsals and performances in a theater production and attendance at a nearby neighborhood church have become the hopeful platforms for social gaps I've been unable to bridge for my daughters. For years His silence was the answer to my unanswered prayers. It seemed more like punishment to me, though deep down I felt neither capable nor willing to generate the extra energy to follow through with on-going commitments.

Physical and mental exhaustion rear their ugly heads regularly upon already fatigued shoulders as I continue to ask Him to provide my children with opportunities; places to mingle with other youth in positive environments where cell phones, iPods, text messaging and designer clothes are not the initial tools required for cultivating real friendships. A family of six living on one income lives without these extras which are so prevalent among teens today.

In the midst of my own doubt He is faithful after the long drought, and the reward for perseverance comes ten-fold when the last theater performance brings family and friends together to share in the success of our first play. Warm congratulations feed exuberant smiles already expressing genuine feelings of accomplishment, new friends are introduced, and an unexpected surprise of soft pink roses, bright tulips, and gift cards to their favorite restaurant are yet another example of His good gifts.

On Wednesday evening, young ones are congratulated for their participation in memorizing Scripture. While reminiscing the sweet scene and the sound of their little voices singing praises to their King, I sew the first patches to beanies representing their "official" membership into the Ever-Ready Club. I am now the mother of a pair of Ever-Ready Girls--ever ready for Jesus' return.











In His timing, the fruit is abundant, even after a long drought.
