Hills behind home less than a mile away show their burned faces. The haze from the smoke has made it impossible to see them clearly until yesterday when clouds broke for the first time since the fires and treated the valley to a bright blue sky, giving way to the crisp clear mornings of autumn I've come to love in years past. The thick pockets of a dense white prison have broken at last.
5. Air quality finally returns to normal and congested little lungs begin to heal; breathing is easier.
6. A burst of energy (after tucking children into bed) cooks up two chicken pot pies and a much needed sprinkling of optimism for a tomorrow that can't possibly go wrong when dinner is already cooling on the stove the night before.
